3 best anime for fans new to shojo
By Diana Nosa
Shojo is a genre that never grows old to anime fans since it usually captures not only the innocence of youth but also the joy and anticipation that comes with falling in love and being with friends. Why this isn't all that shojo is, we know that shojo's core includes more easygoing and gentler themes, especially when compared to shounen.
Nonetheless, shojo is often the go-to genre for new and old anime fans looking for something wholesome and relaxing to watch. All the more reason why we want to ensure that new anime fans, in particular, are starting from the right place before exploring other anime shows belonging to the genre that are sure to change your life forever.
Shojo anime that are a great reflection of the popular genre
One thing that separates shojo from any other anime genre is that shojo is typically catered to young girls or women. In this sense, these shows are usually very cutesy and stray away from excessive battle scenes or strong content. However, this isn't a bad thing. Rather, it's something very much needed and often acts as a nice balance of things we're used to in the anime world.
The anime recommended not only fits the genre of shojo to a T but often expands further upon it showing that shojo is still a developing genre with so much more to come.
Kamisama Kiss
Kamisama Kiss has everything we think shojo is supposed to have---fantasy, school life, and, most importantly, romance.
The anime follows the life of a young girl named Nanami who has one life of her life dedicated to being a school student and another half serving as a small, divine God. She is joined by a handful of subjects, including a fox named Tomoe who is utterly devoted to her whether he likes it or not. Together, Nanami and Tomoe have many little adventures, all of which serve to either strengthen Nanami's divinehood or strengthen the bond between Nanami and Tomoe.
You'll enjoy Kamisama Kiss if you're someone who wants a more dynamic anime with a range of elements that complement each other in a pretty unique way. You get a blend of everything, hence why, despite this anime being shojo, it's a show that you may feel deserves its genre for being so much different than what people expect from shojo.
Kiss Him Not Me
Sometimes shojo anime shows like to poke fun at the genre while still checking off all the boxes of what it means to be a shojo anime. Very few anime can achieve this than Kiss Him Not Me, a hilarious shojo anime that will have laughing until you cry.
Kae is obsessed with all things BL (boys love). So much so that it ruins her chances of experiencing any form of romance since people are usually put off by fujoshi (lovers of BL). Kae's BL obsession aside, what makes her life void of romance is the fact that she's heavier than other girls. But all that changes when she suddenly loses a lot of weight, making her the girl every guy wants to be with. Little do these boys know, however, that she would rather see two boys fall in love.
Kiss Him Not Me breaks the shojo stereotype by giving us a protagonist who is an outcast with strange desires, but also reinforces these stereotypes by showing that this young girl, as quiet as it's kept, wants love.
Ouran High School Host Club
Like Kamisama Kiss, Ouran High School Host Club has romance and school life. However, as we've said before, this isn't all a shojo anime has because, as you'll see in this anime, shojo anime can also talk about gender expression as well as other difficult conversations.
After a string of horrible luck, Haruhi finds herself having to pay back a debt to the Host Club, a club dedicated to sweeping girls off their feet through charm and cute actions. The boys of the club notice that she is increasingly good at knowing what girls want, but little do they know that it's because she's a girl herself. Once this secret is revealed, however, hilarity ensues as they all try their best to keep Haruhi's secret from the rest of the student body while also trying to get used to the idea that a girl has joined their club usually run by boys.
An anime being dedicated to young girls means that what girls go through needs to be at the forefront of the anime's story. The many things girls go through include understanding their gender and defining what femininity means to them. Ouran High School Host Club does this and so much more.
