Following up on the initial announcement revealing that a new project in the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED storyline is in the works from Sunrise (officially now known as Bandai Namco Filmworks), Crunchyroll is now sharing the new project's first trailer. A release date is not yet known as of this writing.
The trailer for the new project, titled Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, has been posted to the official Gundam SEED X (formerly Twitter) profile. The trailer can be viewed below:
Initially released in 2002, the original Gundam SEED anime series kickstarted a separate timeline known as the Cosmic Era, one of several distinct continuities in the larger Gundam franchise that do not directly tie into the others, such as the Universal Century of the original Gundam series or the After Colony era of Gundam Wing.
Crunchyroll provides the following summary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam SEED anime series:
"In Cosmic Era (C.E.) 70...Crunchyoll
"The tensions mounted between the Earth Alliance and the ZAFT Forces caused by the 'Bloody Valentine' tragedy have erupted into an all-out war." The Earth Alliance's mobile armor forces and tanks launch...mobile suits are destroyed one after another...
"It seemed a foregone conclusion that the Earth Alliance, with its superior numbers, would be victorious. But this initial assessment proved to be false. Almost 11 months have passed since the conflict began, with no end in sight...""
What we know so far
So far, the Cosmic Era timeline contains the original Gundam SEED, the sequel series Gundam SEED Destiny, the feature-length anime movie Gundam SEED Freedom and now, the forthcoming Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO. Specific details about Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO are still sparse, though the project's producer Hisakazu Naka has clarified that the new anime will be a prequel to Gundam SEED FREEDOM and therefore serve to bridge the storyline between the Destiny anime series and the FREEDOM movie.
Naka's comments that the medium for FREEDOM ZERO has not yet been decided leave an ongoing level of uncertainty whether FREEDOM ZERO will be a single feature-length movie, a multi-episode anime series or something else entirely. The Anime Away team will have more information as it becomes available, as well as a release date once it's announced.
Additionally, the official Gundam SEED website has announced that Gundam Seed FREEDOM is slated to be re-released on Blu-ray, 4K UHD and DVD this Christmas. Gundam SEED and Gundam Seed Destiny are available to stream at any time on Crunchyroll and Netflix, with Gundam SEED Freedom also streaming on Netflix.
In addition to streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix, the entire Gundam SEED anime is also currently available on YouTube via Sunrise's official Gundam Info channel. The English-language dubs of the Cosmic Era Gundam works are currently only available to stream on Netflix.
