3 anime to watch if you like Wind Breaker
By Diana Nosa
Wind Breaker is one of our favorite anime releases of the season!
The 2024 anime knows how to capture the importance of camaraderie in a way that makes us want to be a part of Bofurin, too. Also, with each character having such unique traits, we find it very easy to relate to everyone. And who can forget about the way the show leaves us entranced with its many fight scenes that leave us wondering just who will rise up on top?!
Simply put, this anime never ceases to keep us entertained. So much so that, after we've watched the weekly brand-new episode, we're already anticipating seeing the next one. Perhaps you feel the same way? If so, then you're in for a treat because we have a handful of similar anime for you to check out when you're missing Wind Breaker on your screens!
At the core of Wind Breaker is an anime about a group of friends or gang members who are willing to do anything and everything for one another. That's why no other anime first comes to mind than Tokyo Revengers!
Tokyo Revengers
Where to stream: Crunchyroll
Similar to Bofurin, no one has each other's back like Toman has each other's backs.
This gang, headed by the amazing Manjiro Sano, is on a mission to be the number one gang in all of Tokyo, and doing so isn't difficult to do in terms of sheer brute strength. Rather, the difficulty stems from personal issues, including (but not limited to) internal turmoil, family dynamics, and, for most members, outside forces that threaten the safety of loved ones.
That's why, through it all, Toman leans on one another in times of need.
In this sense, Tokyo Revengers is very similar to Wind Breaker since both anime make it a point for audiences to realize that being strong is more than just having the physiological strength to beat someone up. Strength, instead, comes from being together.
91 Days
Where to stream: Crunchyroll
Another aspect of Wind Breaker that's important is resolve. Resolve is what drives most characters in this anime to do what they do. To us, 91 Days' protagonist, Avilio Bruno, is the epitome of a character who knows that what's at stake is far too important to sit still and let life pass by.
Avilio's life was flipped upside down when gang violence led to the death of his entire family. Desperate to settle the score, he grows up as a strong and relentless individual who is determined to find who killed his family and bring justice. However, on his journey, he bears witness to the true travesty and senselessness that comes with gangs. He is then faced with two choices: be the hero or become like the villain you swore to rid this world of.
Avilio reminds us a lot of Sakura, our Wind Breaker protagonist, because both never back down away from a challenge to make sure their past selves are proud of them. Safe to say, if Avilio was in the Wind Breaker universe, he would fit right in.
Bungou Stray Dogs
Where to stream: Crunchyroll
Bungou Stray Dogs is slightly different than Wind Breaker because supernatural powers and abilities are integrated into the story. Even so, when it comes to the tried and true theme of good guys versus the bad guys, this anime has it, too!
This anime takes the lives of famous literature celebrities and reimagines them as remarkable individuals, each with unique powers to aid or hurt the world. Atsushi Nakajima, our protagonist, didn't realize it at the time, but he is one of these individuals who will go down in history as the greatest to ever do it. The only thing keeping him from realizing it is the fact that, as we meet him, he's incredibly weak and super reliant on others.
All that changes, though, when he meets Osamu Dazai, a man who teaches him how to harness the power within and use it to thwart evil.
Atsushi, Dazai, and the rest of their group ensure that every day is a day that they know they have the upper hand on their enemies. The same dynamic can be seen in Wind Breaker with Bofurin, the good guys, and Shishitoren, Bofurin's first rival gang.
Although these three are our top recommendations, it doesn't stop there! Here are some of our honorable mentions that we also think are right up your alley:
