Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc episode 3 shows the true monstrosity of Tanjiro
By Diana Nosa
If the third episode of Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc did nothing else, it reminded us of how much of an anomaly Tanjiro Kamado is compared to his fellow peers in the demon slayer corps.
Granted, we've always known this fact since Tanjiro is far from normal; it's not everyone can go up against multiple Upper-Rank demons and still walk away with his body intact. However, this episode really honed it in and made many respect Tanjiro way more.
Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc episode 3 recap
In the first half of the episode, we watch how Tanjiro Kamado easily surpasses Uzui Tengen's training. This doesn't surprise us since Tanjiro and Uzui fought side by side against some of the most ferocious demons we've ever seen. What did surprise us, however, was how lacking the rest of the demon slayer soldiers were.
At first glance, these young demon slayers simply aren't up to any of the Hashira members' par, meaning that in a real battle, they are all as good as dead. Even so, Uzui continues to push them to their limit so that if they ever find themselves against a demon, they will be able to hold their own until they can win...or until someone else comes to save the day.
As the Hashira training arc is underway, Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Hashira, and Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira, meet up to discuss recent events that include demons managing to slip away from their grasp in plain sight.
The two agree and theorize that there might be a secret hideout where these demons are gathering. However, they know that they don't have access to it, so they're left with no choice but to anticipate an eventual attack from the inhabitants of that hideout. This doesn't bring a sliver of worry to Sanemi, but Obanai worries that something wicked may be on the horizon.
Only time will tell whose reaction was more fitting.
Before the two Hashira members go their separate ways, they propose that they have a showdown, an event that we can't wait to see in a later episode.
Back at Uzui's training, Tanjiro talks with Uzui's wives about the Sound Hashira.
As expected, Uzui has tons of regrets regarding his current journey of not being an active Hashira member anymore. This forces Tanjiro to realize that he has to get stronger to avoid similar (or worse) things happening to other Hashira members and the people he cherishes. What better way for Tanjiro to get stronger than with a special challenge cultivated personally by Uzui?!
Since Tanjiro is breezing through Uzui's training with little to no difficulty, Uzui challenges Tanjiro to protect the lives of all the demon slayer soldiers as Uzui pretends to be a demon lurking in the night. This exercise will allow Tanjiro to polish his ability to act quickly in the dark while simultaneously protecting others.
At first, Tanjiro is met with some difficulties. But after he figures out a strategy to juggle both of his objectives, he is victorious.
Fortunately, Tanjiro's quick thinking and great performance at Uzui's training inspire his peers to keep fighting to get stronger. While they may have a long way to go, their resolve is already leaps ahead of where it was at the beginning of the episode.
With Tanjiro having one Hashira training down, Tanjiro sets off to his next location which features yet another Hashira he fought alongside, Muichiro, the Mist Hashira. However, Muichiro isn't going to take it easy on him, as this young prodigy must push Tanjiro past the lessons he's learned at the training before.
To others, episode 3 may have seemed a little filler-heavy, as the manga only had so few panels about Tanjiro's training with Uzui Tengen, the Sound Hashira. However, we think it fits perfectly in the theme of the season, especially because it gave us more insight into what Uzui has been up to after he miraculously survived at the Entertainment District Arc.
