Solo Leveling episode 1 recap

The first episode of Solo Leveling began the series and it introduced the world of monsters and hunters. The episode begins with a monster sighting and a Navy Officer deciding a hunter should handle this situation.

The show cuts to a swarm of large ants clashing with low-level hunters. An S-rank hunter arrives and is able to fend off the creatures. The Guild leader Choi then leads his men to fight off the army of ants. The audience then learns more about the world of Solo leveling where gates suddenly appeared ten years ago and the human world became linked with monsters. These magic beasts are immune to current human weapons and humans with awakened abilities became the weapons to fight the monsters. The humans that possess abilities became known as hunters and they were assigned ranks from S to E. It is also revealed that Hunters can not become stronger once their powers are awakened.

The show then shifts three years later, where hunters are preparing to invade a gate. Two men named Park and Kim meet up and catch up on life. The two men are focused on mailing money from raiding the monster dungeons. The main character of the series then appears, as Sung Jinwoo arrives for the raid and it is revealed that he is regarded as one of the weakest hunters of all time. Sung details the history of his missions where he has difficulty fighting weak E-rank dungeon monsters. Sung's friend Joohee is a healer and she is worried about Sung Jinwoo as he is injured from the lower-ranked missions.

The hunter group then enters the gate to raid the dungeon and the show cuts to Chairman Go and his meeting with higher-ups. Go reveals they are concerned about dungeon breaks but they wish to have hunters keep looting dungeons for resources as they have value in their world. He unveils an essence stone, which is found in the magic beats that hunters defeat. Sung is fighting a low-level monster in the dungeon and he is saved by one of the hunters. Sung is injured and then healed by Joohee. Chairman Go then explains how the essence stones can be turned into powerful weapons and also that the government has plans to use these stones as a way to generate electricity. The stones can serve as a clean energy source for the world.

During the mission in the dungeon, Song's group is able to defeat the monsters around them and Joohee is concerned about Song's future as his abilities will hinder him. Joohee suggests he quit but Sung is determined to help his family and help his sister through college. The other hunters discover a cave in the dungeon that leads a path to somewhere. The hunters are reluctant to enter without communication from the Hunter's association. They take a vote and Sung breaks the tie and requests to advance forward.

The hunters arrive in a dungeon chamber with big statues. The chamber shows signs of a magic circle and ancient scriptures. Joohee catches one of the statues moving its eyes and the group begins to suspect that there is more to the place than they thought. One of the hunters is murdered by the statues and Sung feels the danger and yells for everyone to take cover. The statue shoots a laser and eliminates many hunters as the rest of the group scrambles. The episode then ends with Sung questioning if this is the end for him as he tries to survive the dungeon.
