What happened previously in The Rising of the Shield Hero?

In the last episode of The Rising of the Shield Hero, Naofumi's team is victorious in their match in the underground arena and prepares for their next opponent. It is revealed that their opponent had forfeited after witnessing Naofumi's victory. After the match, Naofumi was invited for a drink by Nadia. After drinking, the two head outside and they are ambushed by a group of challengers who refuse to face them in the arena. Nadia reveals one of her powers which is magic that allows her to manipulate lightning. The two handle the enemies with ease and Nadia advises Naofumi to forfeit ahead of time.

Naofumi continues fighting in the underground arena and is able to save up prize money. His party heads to the local shop and they run into a familiar face, a merchant who is eager to strike a working relationship with Naofumi. Naofumi compromises by offering him a storefront on his land. The next opponent for Naofumi's team was revealed to be Nadia, which gave Raphtalia a familiar feeling as if she knew the challenger.

The match begins between Nadia and Naofumi's teams and the match starts with Thunder magic. Naofumi uses his shield and Filio moves in to attack. Nadia fends off the attack and Naofumi traps her with his shield powers and suddenly a field change spell takes effect to bring in water to the arena.

As the arena fills up with water, Nadia transforms into a killer whale. Naofumi's teams discover that Nadia is a demi-human and she has a significant advantage with water. As Nadia attacks, Raphtalia remembers Nadia as one of her friends from her village and the two embrace.

Nadia is actually Sadeena and she realizes Naofumi's the Shield Hero and that he intends to use the prize money to free the slaves from Raphtalia's village. Nadia is relieved and subsequently forfeits as her goal to free the people is in Naofumi's grasp. The sponsors of the match are enraged by the result of the fight and order Naofumi and Nadia to fight another challenger named Murder Clown.

After exchanging blows with Naofumi and company, Murder Clown disappears with a warning that they should become stronger if they wish to stop the catastrophe. The episode ends with Naofumi winning the prize money and a young demi-human named Fohl is shown buying medicine for his sister.
