What happened previously in The Rising of the Shield Hero?

In the last episode of The Rising of the Shield Hero, Naofumi and his crew arrive at the Melromarc castle to see the Queen. They learn that Aultcray, the Staff Hero, was a fierce warrior driven by vengeance following the death of his sister. The crew also learns the whereabouts of Motoyasu, the Spear Hero, and discovers that his party had disbanded following their failure to defeat the Spirit Tortoise. Also, the Sword Hero's comrades died during a mission and he had disappeared.

Naofumi and his crew return to Lurolona village and resume their activities of running operations. The murder clown, S'yne, that was shown earlier in the season had come to the village unmasked to eat lunch with the rest of the kids. Naofumi was suspicious of S'yne and turned her away and asked her to leave the premises. The crew then set off to find Motoyasu, who is down in the dumps after his defeat.

We learn that Motoyasu has lost the respect of his crewmates and was deserted. Elena refuses to rejoin the team and Motoyasu flees the scene when Naofumi approaches him. Naofumi questions Elena and she reveals that Motoyasu was abandoned for his inability to defeat the spirit Tortoise. Naofumi subsequently heads towards the tavern to find Motoyasu and encounters Ren, the Sword Hero.

Ren is shaken by the death of his crewmates and is reluctant to listen to Naofumi. During their conversation, Malty walks in and we learn that she has left Motoyasu and has been influencing Ren to her side. She immediately pits Ren against Naofumi and riles up the two heroes into a heated confrontation.

Naofumi scolds Ren for falling into Malty's trap and presses him to take responsibility for his crew members. Ren attacks Naofumi in anger and the Shield Hero is able to deflect the attack. At the end of the episode. Motoyasu wakes up to Filo singing in the Tavern and becomes inspired to follow Filo and he agrees to stay with Naofumi in the village.
