As shared by Crunchyroll, anime studio TMS Entertainment has announced a new Magic Knight Rayearth anime. The initial announcement (posted in both Japanese and English) comes via the official Magic Knight Rayearth X (formerly Twitter) account and includes a first look in the form of a key visual and trailer:

This announcement comes as the magical girl isekai series prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original anime series. A release date has not yet been announced, but since 2024 is the anniversary year, the new Magic Knight Rayearth can probably be expected to debut before the end of the year. We will share new details as they are announced.

New life for a '90s classic

Based on the original manga by the group of artists known collectively as CLAMP, the original Magic Knight Rayearth anime series ran for 49 episodes from between 1994 and 1995 and was followed by a series of three OVAs in 1997. The original anime series was produced by TMS Entertainment, the studio that has also produced several seasons of the Lupin III anime, as well as the anime adaptations of Rent-a-Girlfriend and Dr. Stone. TMS will return to produce the new Magic Knight Rayearth series.

The story follows the high school students Hikaru, Umi and Fuu as they are summoned to the world of Cephiro, where they are bestowed with magical girl powers associated with the elements of fire, water, and wind respectively. Crunchyroll provides the following synopsis for the series:

"Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji aren't from Cephiro. While on a school field trip to the Tokyo Tower, the three girls' minds are on anything but different worlds filled with magic and wonder. That is, until Princess Emeraude, the Pillar of Cephiro, cries out for the Magic Knights to save her world--and that just happens to be those three!"
