Based on the novel series by author Reki Kawahara (available in English from Yen Press), the Sword Art Online anime series originally aired from 2012-2020 across several seasons and iterations. Set in what was, at the time of its original publication, the not-too-distant future of 2022, Sword Art Online follows a cast of characters who find themselves trapped in a virtual reality video game that's a bit like a fantasy-themed version of The Matrix, including the fact that anyone who dies in the game dies in real life.
Crunchyroll provides the following summary:
"In the near future, a Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online has been released where players control their avatars with their bodies using a piece of technology called: Nerve Gear. One day, players discover they cannot log out, as the game creator is holding them captive unless they reach the 100th floor of the game's tower and defeat the final boss. However, if they die in the game, they die in real life. Their struggle for survival starts now..."Crunchyroll
