Crunchyroll is now streaming the firs two seasons of the Chinese animation (donghua) series originally known as Mo Dao Zu Shi in the original Chinese. Crunchyroll is using the English title The Master of Diabolism, though English translations of the original title vary by source. For example, Wikipedia's article for the series translates Mo Dao Zu Shi as "Demonic Path Ancestral Master" and Seven Seas entertainment uses the translation "Series: Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation."
Originally aired by Tencent Video starting in 2018, Crunchyroll has released the first and second seasons of The Master of Diabolism in their entirety earlier this week, totalling 23 episodes. The series can be streamed globally, with the exceptions of Japan, Korea, Mainland China and Russian-speaking regions. The series's third season, which originally aired in 2021 is not yet available on the platform. Currently, only the original Mandarin Chinese voice track is available, with subtitles in English, German, European and Latin American Spanish, French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese.
Like the recent series The Apothecary Diaries (also streaming on Crunchyroll), The Master of Diabolism is set in a fantasy world based on the history and mythology of Imperial China. Crunchyroll provides the following summary for season one:
"After attaining the state of immortality, Wei Wuxian’s rule descends down the demonic path of Mo Dao. Ultimately, his reign of terror is overthrown, but the tumultuous fall leads to a chance for redemption. 13 years later, Wei Wuxian is reincarnated and reunites with his former classmate, Lan Wangji. Together they’ll unravel the mysteries of the supernatural world and forge an unexpected bond."Crunchyoll
Crunchyroll is hosting a growing number of non-Japanese series
Based on a novel series written in Mandarin by Chinese author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, The Master of Diabolism is the latest series of non-Japanese origin to find a streaming home on Crunchyroll. Other notable recent examples include the high school drama True Beauty and portal fantasy series Solo Leveling, both of which are Korean series. There are also several Western series streaming on Crunchyroll, including the 90s-era Street Fighter II: The Animated Series — although the video game inspiring the cartoon is Japanese, the series itself was a Canada-US co-produciton.
In addition to the animated series streaming on Crunchyroll, the original Master of Diabolism novel series has received several other adaptations. Originally published as a webcomic, the manhua adaptation of the series is available in English from Seven Seas entertainment, which also publishes the English translation of the novels. There's also a live-action adaptation with the English title The Untamed, which originally aired in China in 2019. Like the animated series, the live-action adaptation was also aired via Tencent Video. Outside of China, The Untamed is currently streaming on Netflix.
