Kill la Kill
What if the outfit you wore gave you superpowers? Ryuko Matoi answers this question in Kill La Kill. Set in a dystopian school in Tokyo Bay, Kill la Kill is an epic tale of revenge. Ryuko, armed with a single scissor blade and a Goku Uniform, must face all of Satsuki's minions and come out on top if she wants to find out the truth about her father.
Kill la Kill has a host of fun characters with lively outlandish humor. The fight scenes steal the show with over the top transformations and skillfully animated attacks. With villains as fun as the heroine, it's a rewarding watch through and through.
Ergo Proxy
If you enjoy dark, gritty, pyschological thrillers, this one is for you. Ergo Proxy is one of the best dystopian anime that's currently out there. Set in a future where androids and humans coexist, one virus threatens it all. Re-l, along with her companions set out on a journey to unravel government conspiracies and bring stability to those existing in Romdeau.
This anime's complex philosophical nature demands a re-watch even if you've previously viewed it. The nihlistic nature of the story set over the decrepit ruined world make for a bleak, but singular viewing experience. It's an emotional rollercoaster, never leaving you with enough time to unravel the mysteries until the very end. Brave viewers will be rewarded with complex characters and a cyberpunk dystopia worthy of exploration.
Blood Blockade Battlefront
Things will get interesting when you meld New York City with literal hell. The events of Blood Blockade Battlefront are centered around young Leonardo Watch and the crime-fighting organization Libra. Fighting terrorist and criminals, all of which are actual demons, Leo fights to return his sister's sight, and make sense of his own strange power.
Battlefront is a criminally underrated blend of supernatural thriller and crime mystery. The city of Hellsalem's Lot is vibrant and bustling, making it seem truly alive. The side characters at Libra really shine as well, each being quirky and essential to the team. Between the daily crime solving, and overarching mystery of Leo's eyes, the anime had something new and interesting at every turn.
Rust-Eater Bisco
Bisco Akuboshi is a mushroom keeper living in a world ravaged by the rust wind. The world blames him for wasting disease plaguing them. Mushroom keepers are societal outcasts. Bisco navigates the treacherous world, giant crab and young doctor Milo in tow, to save the world and the reputation of the mushroom keepers.
With a uniquely captivating concept, Rust Eater was easy to fall in love with. Bisco's brash nature is in wonderful juxtaposition with Milo's more docile manner. The world building was excellent, and the characters were fleshed out well. The action was over the top and, while predictable at points, stayed engaging.
The holiday season can be a stressful time for anyone. Between shopping, and meals, work, and life it can be hard to find time for anything. Make sure to take some time for yourself and indulge in some thrilling post- apocalyptic anime.
