The initial Japanese debut of Dragon Ball DAIMA in 2024 corresponds to the 40th anniversary of the debut of the original Dragon Ball manga in the pages of iconic magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. Although the series's creator Akira Toriyama died in early 2024 before the debut of DAIMA, he was directly and extensively involved in the series's production, including contributing the story concept and character designs. 2024 also saw the death of Doc Harris, the first English-language narrator of Dragon Ball Z.

In addition to Dragon Ball DAIMA celebrating the franchise's 40th anniversary, 2024 also saw the launch of the latest video game in the Budokai Tenkaichi series of Dragon Ball fighting games: Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO. Notably, Sparking! ZERO features a cast of 182 playable characters from all across the franchise's history. The game's publisher Bandai Namco has pointed out that this is the largest roster ever in a Budokai Tenkaichi game.
